On Location with Eva and Susan: A Natural Light Portrait Class

Join me on location as I take you behind the scenes of a real portrait session with Susan, assisted by Eva. You’ll see how I direct and shoot in a beautiful setting using nothing but natural light and the environment around us.

We’ll work through multiple lighting scenarios—indirect, bi-directional, direct, and diffused light—all within one compact location and a tight 30-minute window. I’ll demonstrate how I identify light patterns that add depth, shape, and dimension to a portrait.

Using different lenses and compositions, I’ll guide Susan through various setups to capture the best results straight out of camera. You’ll see how I make fast decisions on location and how each image solves different visual challenges through framing, posing, or camera settings.

At the end, we’ll review the final portraits and I’ll walk you through my compositional choices and why they worked in each situation.
